Description

This beautiful skein has been made using a technique called lock spinning. I am fortunate to live in a rural area and even more fortunate I live just a 10 minute drive from a ladywho happens to breed the gorgeous Leicester Longwool sheep shown in the photos. She keeps a small flock of 6 only and I am able to visit her and her lovely ladies and buy the fleeces direct. The Leicester Longwool is on the rare breed list which is a shame as the fleeces are amazing. They are super soft, bouncy and have an incredible lustre. The locks are very long and the ones shown in the picture are over 13" in length. This one is cream with golden tips and they also come in a gorgeous grey mix and a rich chocolate brown.

This is a completely natural skein - the lady who breeds the sheep uses no chemicals at all on her sheep and she just lets them roam freely around the pastures. When I prepare the fleeces I just wash them in cold water (rain water if I have enough which is a natural softener) and then once I have spun the skeins I wash them in very hot water mixed with an eco liquid soap to remove the lanolin.

The locks are far to beautiful to be combed out for traditional spinning in my opinion and are best as a lock spun yarn. This skein is huge at 270 gr of super bulky weight yarn and I have left some of the locks hanging loose which gives an attractive look to a super textured yarn. I also have 2 skeins of 150 gr weight each if you would like a smaller skein. I'm happy to discuss custom orders.

This skein would be fantastic knitted up as a shawl or would be enough to make several cowls, a unique bag, or a weaving project - the list is endless.

Specifications: 260 gr 9 oz super bulky yarn recommended 10mm - 12mm knitting needles or crochet hook
Untreated, undyed natural wool which deserves a gentle handwash in warm liquid soap

Delighted with the funky chicken egg cosies. Will make an excellent Easter gift, instead of the usual glut of chocolate. They are beautifully finished and the kids will ove them. Thank you Karen for making it really easy to customise the order.
