Dimensions

Pendant height: 1.12 Inches; Pendant width: 1.06 Inches

This pendant features a stunning dragonscale Ethiopian opal with harlequin geometric fire and a natural clamshell shape. It measures 0.80 x 1.05 inches (2.03x 2.66 cm) and weighs in at 12.8 carats. It is set in solid 14k white gold.

Ethiopia has produced some of the finest opal that the world has ever seen. Though the major find in Welo province is the most famous and well known, over a decade earlier opal was discovered in Shewa province. These stones came in a wide range of colors and showed patterns of fire that had never really been seen before, and wouldn't be seen again until the find in Welo. We were very lucky to be able to pick stones from a fresh parcel of Shewa opal from one of our favorite suppliers--they hadn't even looked through it themselves, so we were able to select some incredible stones like this one.

This stone is a real stunner. It has a dark chocolate-colored base with a thin white skin all around, and is completely shot through with bright rainbow fire. The fire is arranged in distinct scales which completely cover the face of the stone, a rare and stunning pattern known as dragonfire. It is a truly amazing gem, filled with saturated flames in every color of the rainbow, with geometric patterning similar to honeycomb or harlequin opals. It is impossible to capture the true beauty of this stone in a photo, but in person when it is turned groups of flakes flash different colors. It is about as bright and metallic as you could hope for. This stone also shows an unusual natural shape that is reminiscent of a clam shell, and may well be a fossil of some sort.

Note that opal is a relatively soft gem and should be treated with a bit of extra care. Opals from Shewa should never be soaked in water.
