Description

This listing is for a large hand carved wooden pineapple finial. The carving is 11" and the base is 1 3/4" high and 5" x 5" length and width. I do not know the history of date of this carving. This a beautifully carved finial but has no markings. It is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks.

Each pineapple plant gives its own life to produce a single fruit, and since 1681, the pineapple has been recognized as a Christian symbol. Around this time, Christopher Wren began using pineapple finials on churches.

The pineapple has been a symbol of hospitality since the 1700s. Taverns and lodging in New England had pineapples on their doors and signs and even carved their bedposts in the shape of a pineapple. The sweetness and unusual appearance of the pineapple and its association with fertility and agriculture made it a sought-after delicacy in colonial America. When it was served to guests, they were naturally flattered at the honor, and thus may have evolved the idea that the pineapple was considered a sign of the highest form of hospitality.

The pineapple finial has become a symbol of warmth and welcome so is displayed on banisters in foyers of homes and dining areas. This lovely finial will continue the tradition of hospitality and welcome in your home.

I have many lovely breakables in my shop. I strive to package your order securely with bubble wrap, styrofoam peanuts, and a "box within a box" or extra cardboard for protection. Each order is insured with the USPS. If an item is damaged in shipping, please take pictures of the damage and the packaging. I will file a claim with the USPS and make sure you are reimbursed for the damage.

I will ship internationally, but please let me know up front your location because of the extra expense for shipping. Customs duties, taxes and processing fees may be incurred, depending on the country shipped to. Buyers may be asked to pay customs fees before receipt of package.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.
