Description

ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF BEER AND BREWING:
From Prehistoric Times to the Beginning of Brewing Science and Technology; A Critical Essay.

by John P. Arnold.
Chicago: Alumni Ass'n of the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, 1911

First edition, first impression of one of the classic books on the history of brewing. This is a foundational work, and should be in any library of beer, ale, and fermentation.

Most importantly, however, this first edition is inscribed by the author to Joseph Bosch, who founded the Bosch Brewing Company in 1874. Bosch Brewing was a microbrewery (before they were cool) that lasted 99 years!

Signed copies of this first edition are understandably rare, and for this to be an association copy makes it a spectacular book to own. A real highlight.

The author has also made a pencil annotation to page 52, making note of new research (the book was published in 1911, and he signed it in 1917, so new information came to light in the intervening years.) This kind of manuscript note makes the book even more valuable.

The book is illustrated with woodcuts showing the history of brrewing. Bound in decorated boards & marbled endpapers. Clean & solid, minor wear, but no real flaws.

Book measures 10" tall by 7-1/4" wide and almost 2" thick. 411 pp.
