Description

This abstract sterling pendant I made for the Mad Scientists of Etsy August challenge on endosymbionts. OK, most of you are asking "what is an endosymbiont?" so I will explain. An endosymbiont is any organism that lives within the body or cells of another organism. For example, it has been theorized that various cell parts like chloroplasts and mitochondria were at one time in the very distant past free-living cells, but were incorporated into other cells and became part of the cell. Anyway, this pendant tries to capture the idea of a cell and its endosymbiotic parts. OK, 'nuff science talk!!!

On to the main attraction: I hand fabricated this pendant out of sterling silver onto which I soldered a dome and a wavy saucer, with green freshwater pearls in it ,to represent endosymbiotic cell parts. I bezel set an aventurine cabochon for added interest. A heavy gauge sterling silver "flagellum" extends from the end. (For you non-science folk out there, a flagellum is a whip-like "tail" that allows some cells to propel themselves, think sperm, for example.) Pendant hangs from a 16" sterling chain. Pendant itself is about 3.5" long by 2" wide.

Item will be wrapped in a pretty package.

All my jewelry are one of a kind pieces, designed and created by me, the artist in my home studio. I use traditional jewelry making, lapidary, and metalsmithing skills such as cabochon cutting and polishing, soldering, hammering, shaping, filing, polishing, gem setting, and wire and beadwork. Large cabochons are hand cut and polished by moi on my Pixie cabochon cutting machine. So much fun! I also use natural materials for necklace cords, like hand dyed silk, leather, or bamboo. My look is rustic, geometric, boho, perfect for the beach, a night out, work, or just plain anytime!
