Description

This is a working Elgin pocket watch in a gold filled Philadelphia case. However, I have no idea when this piece was last cleaned and serviced, and would highly recommend having it looked over by a watchmaker if you plan on using this as a functioning timepiece. I also did not check this watch for accuracy for more than about an hour.

This Elgin watch movement is a grade 344, 12 size, 17 jewel movement made in 1919. The serial number is 21665888. The movement has lovely damaskeening, and appears clean and well-maintained. However, there are scratches and scuffs that are evident, especially around the winding gears. The dial on this piece is quite unusual, with a hand-painted crest at the top. It is labeled "L. R. Hummel." There is some wear around the outer edge of the dial and two easily visible hairline cracks that I can see. One runs from the top of the sub-second dial over to the edge of the dial between the 9 and 10 o'clock position. Another runs from the edge past the 9 o'clock position, across to the middle. There also appears to be a small crack or hairline near the top left of the sub-second dial, and another short one that runs from the bottom left of the sub-second dial to the edge of the dial next to the 7 o'clock position. All three hands are in good condition, and set and function as they should.

This is a gold filled case by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company, and has the crown insignia on the inside of the back dust cover. The serial number of the case is 8947576. The case is in very good condition, with minimal brassing or darkening. There is a little bit of darkening around the bottom hinges, and some brassing below the stem where it meets the case body. The front cover is nicely detailed with a blank engraving cartouche. It opens and shuts as it should, but there is some wear along the inside of the hinged area, as well as some discoloration on the inside of the front cover. The back cover is also nicely detailed. Both it and the cuvette open and shut securely. While there is some wear and light scratching in places, this case is in very good cosmetic condition, with lots of years of wear left!

This pocket watch measures just under 47mm wide and is 59mm tall from the bottom of the case to the top of the crown. This watch is currently working, but will need a cleaning and servicing by a watchmaker. Enjoy!
