Description

Covered in plush Italian velvet, this handheld kaleidoscope is a work of art. It’s signed on one end by the visual artist, “C Huber” for Craig Huber. According to his website, Huber has been “creating delights for the eyes and mind since l977.” His handcrafted, unique pieces have been sold in museums and fine art galleries throughout the world.

We purchased this kaleidoscope at an artisan gallery in New York City in the late l980s. It’s on the larger size measuring 12.5” long and 2” wide. It’s covered with a brown, tan, mauve, and dark navy blue velvet, over wood and seamed on one side (see photo). According to Huber’s website: “The Galactiscope is a completely unique visual surprise! An optical experience of brilliant colors creates a cascade of swirling and tubular reflections. It's a real eye teaser.”

In this case, this hand held piece creates a tunnel of changing colors swirling as you move the piece around. Looking through this artfully crafted kaleidoscope offers a magical pause with a changing view. The piece is in very good vintage condition, having been lightly used and admired over the years in my husband’s collection of displayed behind-glass Kaleidoscopes. The pictures offer greater perspective on its craftsmanship and vintage charm.

FAQs

Some pieces I clean, others I don’t. However, the majority of items are presented as found. There are a variety of collectors and collectible pieces, and an equal number of opinions about whether a particular vintage item should or shouldn’t be cleaned or repaired. I err on the side of being conservative here, wanting you to decide how to treat your item. There’s plenty of information available online that will help you determine the best way to clean, preserve, or treat any vintage item.
Depending on the item, it may or may not be able to be gift wrapped before shipping. If that's something you need, please ask.
