Vintage Mexican Tonala Pottery Quail, Hand Painted Folk Art c1950's

Favorite

Description

This impishly cute stoneware quail is hand painted with cobalt blue and black scrollwork over a delicate blue/grey glaze - and derived from the Wilmot & Vasquez schools of pottery. It is circa late 1950's and sports the "Flor de Tonala" (Tonala flower) on its back. Jorge Wilmot and Ken Edwards both introduced high fire stoneware ceramics to Mexico in the 1950s and fused local historical imagery with new techniques. At that time, Wilmot favored a pale blue/grey-green glaze and decorated birds and animals with floral patterns.

This artist has captured a sweet character in the face. I recognize this artist's craftsmanship, style and handwriting, although this piece is unsigned. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attribute a name.

SIZE: 4 3/4" in height; 3 1/4" width; 6" depth
MARKED: Tonala, Jal MEXICO (from Jalisco)

VINTAGE NEVER-OWNED INVENTORY
This item comes from a shop operated in Portland, Oregon from the 1940's - 1969. Any wear is consistent with age and storage.

My mother owned a chic little place known as the Mexican Craft Shop, which carried handblown glassware, handmade pottery, stunning SW Indian and Mexican jewelry, baskets, textiles, leather goods, and clothing. This item was part of her inventory. After many years of waiting patiently in storage, these items are ready for a new home... and a new story.
