Letterpress Print: Pablo Neruda "El Mar", Spanish quote, Blue and Black, Hand Carved Linocut, Wall Love Print, Valentine Gift

This sweet poem by Pablo Neruda comes from his lovely book “Una Casa en la Arena” (The House in the Sand), about his house in Isla Negra, Chile. But so much of the book is about the sea, the huge Pacific extended in front of him, at sight every time he gazed out.

Neruda intended the house in Isla Negra – his favorite over his two other homes – to be used for free as a retreat for young Chilean writers, after his death. The military took this house from him shortly before his death. Although it was not vandalized (as one of his other houses), it was kept closed by the government for a long period, not knowing what to do with all of its rich content, sculptures and all things oceanic, and with Pablo impressed in every corner. People came from all around the world and not being able to visit the interior of the house, left messages to Neruda on the long outside fence, written in charcoal, in ink, whatever was available. The writings would get washed away with every rain. Then more people would come and write more. Neruda and his wife Matilde are buried there.

I too love the sea. To celebrate his work I printed "El Mar", framed by the façade of my house. As those itinerants hoped that poetry would inhabit once again the house in Isla Negra, I also hope Neruda's poetry circulates in my home forever.

The old used type lends small variations in color and impression, which are a part of the appeal of this hands-on process. The gorgeous texture and impression that is characteristic of this nostalgic printing technique is the charm of this simple artwork. The house illustration was hand-drawn and hand-carved by me from a linoleum block.

SPECS:
- Each letter was handset and is a one piece of movable type, even the English translation in the bottom, which means this was completely done just like the 400 year old technique, by Gutenberg!
- Letter-pressed one by one on a hand-fed 1870's manual (no motor, pedal only) Chandler & Price Press with linseed oil ink, in a rich blue and opaque black.
- Each letter is a piece of movable type, even the English translation at the bottom.
- Printed on hand-torn, mold-made Italian (Magnani Pescia) 100% cotton white stock, thick and luxuriously to the touch. All have 2 deckle edges. 25% of pieces have mill watermark. Acid-free.
- Paper: 11" x 15" / Image: 8" x 12.5"
- FRAME NO INCLUDED.
- Edition: 100, signed and numbered w/ pencil in front.

FRAMING TIPS:
Good options for framing are US standard frame sizes 12x16 (no mat window necessary, mount on top of bottom mat), and 16x20 (w/ mat window). 14x18 also could work. In any case, I'd expose the beautiful edges (part deckle, part hand-torn). In addition, DickBlick.com has very nice custom frame kits for great prices.
