Vintage Limoges Brooch with Enamel Lady's Portrait: This unusual and rare piece delivers all three characteristics of a true Limoges (see below). Measuring 1 3/4" (4 cm) in diameter, it features a miniature cameo of an early 19th century woman, surrounded in a gold tone filagree studded with cultured seed pearls. In perfect condition in terms of working clasp and secure pearls, it has a certain patina which adds to its aged allure.

Limoges has become the generic name of hard paste porcelain that was produced during the 18th, 19th and into the 20th century in one of the many factories in Limoges, France. Considered the finest hard paste porcelain in the world, it shares three very distinct characteristics: essential ingredients of feldspar, quartz, and kaolin, the intense firing process forming a translucent glaze, and the abundance of highly skilled artisans with a French flair for design.

Besides serving as a stunning lapel pin or attached to the front of a beret, a creative jeweler could easily fasten a loop onto the back to make it into a pendant, and it would also make a stunning wall hanging for a vintage dollhouse.
