Description

In the cultural lore of Japan, the crane is a mystical creature, believed to live for a thousand years. This brooch features the graceful bird of happiness and good fortune, rendered in hand pierced brass and etched with elegant detail. The open work makes a stunning statement with almost any fabric behind it. With a little black dress? Beautiful. With a little RED dress? Sublime.

This is a family piece, which makes me certain that it dates from the 1930's or before, but uncertain of many other details. My grandparents were missionaries in Japan beginning in the 1920s until World War II. Gifts that were given and received during that time often came from the tinker's cart; Some were newly crafted and some were very old, having been traded to the tinker for some household necessity.

This is a large brooch, measuring approximately 50 mm in diameter. The clasp on the back is the original, with no repair or replacement in the intervening years. While the piece has been lightly polished to reveal the detail, I have left the question of whether or not to bring it to a high shine to you.

There is some darker patina near the wingtips. I don't remember that being part of the design when I was a child so it might be the result of a storage issue. In that case, it could likely be restored to it's original glory by your local jeweler.

As mentioned above, this piece is solid brass. The tone is pale (lower copper content) and the metal is flat to the design surface, as intended, with no signs of bending or crimping. Overall weight is 9 grams.

Sadly, there is no artist signature or mark to identify the hand that created this graceful bird. One thing is certain: It deserves to be enjoyed rather than tucked away in a box any longer.

**Our fine jewelry is always boxed for shipping.**
