Even in broad daylight, the clear neon tubing of the vintage blue & yellow motel sign in this roadside Americana photo spells out "VACANCY" clear as day. This is but a portion of the famed Palomino Motel sign which stands beside Route 66 in New Mexico, but the sign is so incredible, I found myself documenting it in pieces—thus this photograph of only the classic sign's faded yellow "VACANCY" leg, which actually loops up around the main part of the Palomino's sign, reminiscent of and perhaps intending to resemble the most glittered lasso any one has ever seen.

We see only the beginning of that lasso in this documentary photograph of the sign, though. Instead, the frame is filled with blue sky, the lower edge of the classic sign's main portion, and the lower part which told motorists in a jiffy whether or not the motor court had rooms available or not. The clear glass neon tubing is in perfect condition, the VACANCY letters connected by ingenious bends and curves of the glass. Thanks to the sunlight streaming from above, the glass casts crisp, shimmering shadows onto the yellow steel, shadows that have no qualms about revealing what the tubing might like to hide.

Most of the bulb sockets are empty, but happily, the sign retained a few of the round incandescents, each of which casts a shadow against the sign as they cluster near the right side of the photo. Fragile and transparent, they're attached for life to an enormous steel sign by a great American roadside; they give the Palomino Motel's sign its glamour at night and lend a bit of sparkle and texture during the day. Delicate beauties they may be, but they carry their weight whether in moonlight or sunlight!

So fascinated was I by the neon sign of this famed Mother Road motor court, I produced more than one version of this very shot! Here's the lasso handle in softer hues:

• The limited-edition Route 66 neon photo you receive will not be watermarked.

• I personally sign & number the back of each art photograph. After 776 prints are made, the edition is closed and the photograph will no longer be available for sale.

• My roadside Americana photographs are professionally printed at the highest resolution on archival photo paper with a matte finish to be smudge, fade, and water resistant.

• Very few of my art photographs are a standard print or frame size; thus each print has a slender white border surrounding the photograph itself. This border not only allows you to buy a frame 'off the rack', but serves to lend a bit of additional protection to the actual photograph itself from any serious damage.

• A signed Certificate of Authenticity is included with each photo print.

• Signed photographs are carefully wrapped in acid-free tissue, sandwiched between pieces of foam core, and mailed First Class. Once I have a tracking number, it will be sent to you.

• My monitor is professionally calibrated for colour; therefore, the colours in your received print may be slightly different from what you see displayed online.

As few of my finished photographs are standard frame size, each of my photographic prints has a white border all the way around the image. This not only means you can buy a frame 'off the rack' if you do not want a custom frame, but the white border does protect the image itself from errant fingerprints or other unintentional damage.
Since these photographs are my own interpretation of the sights as seen by me, I am sorry, but I generally will not make a colour photo black & white or vice-versa. Occasionally during post-production I'll be unable to decide which I like better and publish both, but while it does happen, it's not often, and the image I do release is not arbitrary, but the one I think best suits the subject and composition. Thanks for understanding this.
