As the end of summer approaches (sob!), I felt compelled to pay homage to all us beach bums out there (and those who just love the colors of the sea). For these whimsical, beautiful earrings, I used a faceted, pear shaped briolette of Seafoam Chalcedony. The color is just wonderful - blues/greens and reminiscent of the beach glass we'd find all along the shore. To mimic that glittery sparkle that you see when the light hits the water just so, I used sterling silver wire for wrapping. Lastly, I suspended this wonderful, pure silver fish charms handcrafted in Thailand by the Karen Hill Tribe. Both the stone and charm hangs off a very delicate, oxidized sterling chain. The earwires are simple, sterling hooks. Total dangle on these earrings is about 1 3/4 inches, from bottom of ear wire.

Chalcedony is a very fine-grained variety of quartz. It has a waxy luster and appears in a great variety of colors -- usually blue-white, buff, light tan, gray, yellow or brown. It has a compact fibrous structure and fine splintery fracture. It is said that chalcedony was used as a sacred stone by the Native Americas, promoting stability within the ceremonial activities of the tribe. Chalcedony is said to augment emotional balance, vitality, stamina, endurance, kindness, charity and friendliness. It supposedly alleviates hostilities, irritability and melancholy.

Karen Hill Tribe Silver
These wonderful Silver beads and charms are made by hand in Thailand by the Karen Hill Tribe and are Fair Trade Approved. Being between 99.5% and 99.9% pure silver, their silver product has a higher silver content than Sterling silver. It’s the solder used to fuse the silver components together that makes up the last fractions of a percent. Consequently, it has a weight, bright satin color, and feel, all of its own. . The Karen is famous for their use of beads for ornamentation as well as the silversmith skill Every piece is handmade and individual. The hand-hammered and chased details are wonderful and you can actually see evidence of each piece having been formed by the hands of Karen craftsmen.
The Karen Tribe has rituals to live harmoniously with the "Lord of the Land and Water", as well as with nature spirits in the rocks, trees, water and mountains that surround them. They also have guardian spirits and believe in the soul.
