Description

Penguin Hot and Cold Server
Eight penguins are waddling around the outside of this sphere shaped serving bowl.

In 1941, inventor Ralph N. Kircher drew up the plans for the West Bend Penguin Hot and Cold Server. Taking the form of a sphere with a flattened base, the vessel’s central decorative band depicts a colony of penguins, one waddling behind the other. The shiny and reflective surface of the server (available in chrome or copper-plated steel) creates a contrast between the cover’s knob and the vessel’s handles, the latter mimicking the curvature of a penguin’s flippers.
Produced in West Bend, Wisconsin, in the 1940's, the Penguin Hot and Cold Server is an iconic object of postwar American culture. Designed to insulate both hot and cold foods, and to keep ice cubes chilled, the Penguin highlights the resurgence in home entertainment after the war, including popular leisure activities like outdoor grilling and cocktail parties.

Use as ice bucket or serve up something hot! A fun serving piece.
The lid is not insulated.

Bottom information reads: West Bend Penguin Hot & Cold Server
A Product of West Bend Aluminum Co. West Bend Wis. U.S.A.. PATENT NO. 2,349,099, DES. 127279
I love the picture of the penguin fanning him/herself on the bottom!

Measures 8" tall with lid, 10" across with wooden handles. Opening at top is 6".

Condition: No obvious scratches. Surface is still shiny, not clouded. No dents. Lid fits in place perfectly. Interior is clean and smooth. The lid shows some corrosion. Exterior cleaned up very nicely but a little sign of corrosion especially around one of the handles. See pictures. Rubber gasket seems tight and effective. Wooden handles show a bit of water damage but are dark as new. Round top handle and side handles are secure.
