Description

The statement 'As Above, So Below' comes from Hermeticism, a philosophy that was popular among the ancient Greeks. It experienced a revival among alchemists and philosophers in the European Renaissance. Issac Newton was one of many intellectuals that studied Hermetic philosophy.

The statement itself is about the macrocosm (that which is Above), that which is outside, the world, nature, is reflected in the microcosm (that which is Below), our minds, our interior selves. We are reflections of the universe, the universe is a reflection of us.

What's with the goat? That's a reflection of Hermes, which the hermetic philosophy is named after. He is a Greek God that moves freely between the mortal and the divine. He is a messenger, a trickster, and he helps guide departed souls to the afterlife. Homer, the author of the Illiad called Hermes "the bringer of good luck", "guide and guardian", and "excellent in all the tricks".
