Description

I purchased these loose kidney beads from a woodworker who is the parent of adult children involved in a paired donation. He has now retired his kidney line and has moved on to other carpentry jobs full time. I'm sorry to lose his work on my website as his craftsmanship was superb. These beads are all I have left of his wooden kidney shapes.

These are made of Tiger Maple, also known as Curly Maple and Flamed Maple. The unique markings on this wood occur during tree growth and produce the wavy line pattern you see, which are known as "Flames."
The kidney bead feels great in the hand and is smooth and silky to the touch. I've used them as pendants on both silicone cord and sterling silver chain, as well as on key rings. The variations are listed in the drop down menu.

Of course there is a reason that I sell and create kidney jewelry. I am both a long time jewelry designer as well as a long time kidney patient. After 10 years of dialysis and now 15 years with a living donor kidney transplant from a heroic cousin, I began creating kidney jewelry in 2002 as a way to thank my own donor for her remarkable Gift of Life. Discovering some kidney shaped beads at a gem show, my goal was to use them and turn them into jewelry. My kidney pieces needed to have both meaning and beauty as they would become a small token of appreciation for my donor's Gift of Life. I began to wonder if other people were searching online for kidney shaped items of quality materials. The internet seemed to be the answer and I soon began selling across the globe. My little kidneys are now in every US state and 15 countries worldwide.
