Description

This is a signed Sotheby's auction catalogue from the 9 February 1995 sale of costumes & opera memorabilia in London, belonging to Dame Joan Sutherland. It's my belief this is the only catalogue signed by both. Dame Joan gained the title La Stupenda from the discerning audience at La Scala for what later became her iconic role in Lucia di Lammermoor. She's considered to be one of the great bel canto sopranos. Franco Zeffirelli, an Italian, is one of the greatest opera producers & directors. Dame Joan signed the catalogue for me on the day of the auction.

Franco Zeffirelli signed it several weeks later when he gave a lecture at the Royal Geographical Society in London. I asked him to sign my catalogue because I purchased 2 of the costumes from La Traviata, lot 35, listed under the photo of Dame Joan, which it attributes to him. He told me he didn't design either of the costumes I purchased & was very clear which ones he did design. This started a chain of events in which I discovered some of the items included were not even worn for that opera. This led to a dispute with Sotheby's & Dame Joan which was detailed in a number of newspapers. Dame Joan wrote me from her home in Switzerland. Her signed letters plus documents relating to the sale will be listed separately.

Approximate Measurements 21cm x 27 cm

Slight yellowing at the edges of the pages. A small fault with the shiny coating on the bottom left of the rear cover, as shown in the photo. Wear to the bottom right corner of the cover & some pages. You are welcome to request further photos.
