Inspiration and Influences. The Tokonoma Series was inspired by the Asian art displayed in tokonomas alcoves. As the sacred center of a traditional Japanese home, tokonomas were reserved for treasured items like scrolls or calligraphy, beautiful kimonos, ikebana flower arrangements, miniature bonsai trees, and fine ceramics for tea ceremonies. The items displayed were changed for special occasions, according to the season, or to create different settings and atmospheres.

Autumnal Influences. The copper colored flower petals are reminiscent of autumn flowers and are complimented with a dark teal blue colored rayon decorative thread.

Photo 1. Close up of fabrics and embroidery. The vintage silk kimono fabric has a crepe-like texture, note the tiny crinkles or pleats. The copper colored flower combines beautifully with the peach and red shot fabric in dupioni silk.

Photo 2. Shown Ready to Frame with 10" x 8" (25 x 20 cm) white paper mat, 4.5" x 3.5" opening (11 x 9 cm).

Photo 3. Shown as framed, frame not included.

Photo 4 & 5. Companion pieces also ready to frame with 10" x 8" (25 x 20 cm) white paper mats.
