Description

Sorry, we could not translate this listing to English.
A sumptuous bustle dress for evening / dinner wear dating to the 1880s. At first glance the cut of the bodice, and the bold velvet bands made me think 1870s, but once displayed the silhouette looks more 1880s, and the skirt has built in hoops, which i think is something you only see in the '80s ( i could be wrong ) There are signs that this was an older dress that was remodelled - there are old stitch lines around the shoulders, and there are too many eyelets in the back, the excess being folded in to the hem.
Either way, a lovely piece - imposing and graphic in its design, with a rich, luxurious feel. Two pieces, in a dull orange silk with deep brown velvet and silk. The bodice is boned and fitted, cut straight around the waist and fastening with lacing in the back ( the lacing isn't original, something a little more refined would look better...), with hooks at the waist and neck. Around the waist is a wide band of the velvet, which hides buttons that originally fastened the skirt to the top. The neck is low and square, edged with more velvet, and the centre front panel is also velvet. Sleeves are tailored and three quarter, trimmed with velvet with beading and a tulle ruffle ay the cuff.
The skirt is magnificent - heavy and voluminous, there is a cotton underskirt with built in hoops and ties (i've also used a bustle in the images ) and a pleated dust ruffle edged with lace. At the front a false apron effect is created with the orange silk, pleated diagonally so that it swirls downwards around the hips. Below this is a large panel of the velvet, with two large splits filled in with pleated brown silk. At the bottom are deep square scallops, and brown silk pleating runs around to the back. At the back the orange silk is pleated in to the side seams and waist to create a huge bustle. The fabric flows down to a train, where it is bagged out to create even more volume. There is a hidden pocket. A mix of hand and machine sewing.

CONDITION

The fabric has some small marks, one dark mark on the train, shown in the images and some very small holes ( a couple of mm. ) On the bodice the velvet is partially loose at the right bust, and there is a repair to one of the seams in the left arm which is partially open, and some more hand sewn repairs to the seams. Some feint under arm staining. The tulle at the cuffs is shredded. Around the waist the velvet doesn't meet up at the back - it looks like there may have been a repair on the left side which shortened the band? Or maybe a bow or something is missing? The eyes for the hooks are missing. Of the buttons that attach to the skirt one is a replacement, one is missing its silk cover and at least one is missing. On the skirt the waistband has split and has old repairs in places, this means the buttonholes that attach to the skirt now don't really work, and inside there is a tear to the cotton underskirt in the bustle area.
