Clarice Lispector is an author who is very dear to my heart. This piece is based on her book "The Passion According to G. H." about a woman having a revelatory experience after looking into the eyes of a dying cockroach. Here is a selection of text from it:

“With my hands quietly clasped on my lap, I was having a feeling of tender timid joy. It was an almost nothing, like when the breeze makes a blade of grass tremble. It was almost nothing, but I could make out the minuscule movement of my timidity. I don't know, but with distressed idolatry I was approaching something, and with the delicateness of one who is afraid. I was approaching the most powerful thing that had ever happened to me...I was handing myself over, to whatever was no longer I, to whatever is already inhuman. And handing myself over with the trust of belonging to the unknown..the simultaneous present no longer scared me, and in the furthest extremity of me I could finally smile without even smiling. At last I was stretching beyond my sensibility.” (188-9)

This piece measures 8" x 8" (about 20x20 in cm) and was created with genuine 22 karat moon gold leaf on glass.

Verre Eglomisé is a process of gilding gold leaf to glass, scraping into it with a stylus and stiff brushes to reductively form an image, and then reverse painting over it with sign painter's enamel for protection and color (then it is viewed from the other side of the glass).

Verre eglomisé pieces are very difficult to photograph because the gold reflects like a mirror, and the colors showing through the gold shift depending on the light. I did my best to show the piece at a variety of angles and lighting situations.
