Description

Warm weather and the arrival of pesky insects go hand in hand.
Rather than dousing yourself and loved ones with pesticides and organophosphates, and then worry about the risks of these toxic ingredients, try an approach these buggers naturally detest and don't build up a resistance. The chemical makeup and the scent of certain plants and their essential oils encourages them to buzz off and leave you alone.

Gardeners who utilize companion planting are probably aware that Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is used for warding off detrimental insects. Named for Achilles, the Greek warrior who used the plant for his wounded soldiers, it is one of the oldest medicinal plants known to man and holds its place in folk medicine as a cure all.

Infused in 100 proof alcohol for several weeks results in a tincture very useful as a bug repellent and soothing for existing skin inflammation from insect bites and poison ivy, oak and sumac. Diluted with witch hazel further enhances the astringent cooling relief.

This spray also utilizes various effective essential oils.
Catnip has many other uses besides entertaining our feline companions. Studies have found that nepetalactone, a compound found in catnip was more effective than DEET at repelling mosquitoes. DEET can cause rashes and eye irritation so if there is an alternative why not try it?
A pricey essential oil but it works.

No matter what the ailment, it seems to be relieved with lavender.
Lavender deters bugs in addition to disinfecting and relieving the itch of existing bites and stings.

Citronella is a strong, potent oil in which most of us are familiar with its presence in patio type candles to ward off mosquitoes.

Geranium is actually an insecticide. In addition to repelling bugs, this oil can kill them.

Rosemary and Lemongrass are included on most every list of bug repellent plants, very useful.

So if you would prefer a spray rather than a topically applied herbal oil (another option): https://www.etsy.com/listing/55089593/bug-bite-balm-beat-it-bugs-herbal-body?ref=shop_home_active_5, than try this Yarrow Bug Repellent.

Spray onto exposed skin prior to outdoor activities. Avoid getting into your eyes. Use your own discretion as to how often it must be reapplied. Don't expect natural sprays to last as long as those containing pesticides, but you just may be impressed with how effective they are.

*****Pregnant women need to check with their physician before using essential oils and the herb Yarrow. Due to the potency of the essential oils, best to avoid use on children under the age of five years old.******
An alternative for young children and pregnant women would be:

*****Can be used as a bug deterrent for dog bedding but too strong in potency to use right on the animal's fur unless further diluted. If desired for this purpose let me know and I'll dilute it with distilled water and put into an 8 oz. plastic spray bottle. As beneficial as it is, yarrow may cause vomiting if ingested in large quantities. Being very bitter, it is doubtful a pet would lick enough for it to be toxic. If your pet is pregnant or lactating, check with your veterinarian before using a product containing yarrow.
Not for use on cats.*****

Yarrow Insect Deterrent Body Spray comes in a 2 oz or 4 oz. plastic spray bottle.

Veterinarians tell us the flea and tick treatments are deadly for the pests but safe for our dogs. Bug sprays for humans state the dosage isn't large enough to cause problems.
Yet on the other hand we are bombarded with warnings about the chemicals in these products.
How much is too much? How long till toxicity builds up? Unsure of what to believe anymore, taking the 'better safe than sorry' approach seems like the better choice. Some years are worse than others for fleas and ticks and situations may at times call for bringing out the 'big guns', but for every day, every month prevention, it may be better for all involved to go the natural route to ward off pests.

What are organophosphtaes?
Organophosphates are found in pesticides. They are potent neurotoxins at the level of the neuromuscular junction so they cause paralysis and respiratory failure by blocking acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholine is an important neurotransmitter in regulating muscle control and acetylcholinesterase is vital to regulating its activity.
Organophosphates kill because they interfere with the nervous system of both insects and humans. Under normal conditions, acetylcholinesterase sends chemical signals to halt nerve impulses at appropriate times. When the acetylcholinesterase enzyme is disturbed, neurological overstimulation occurs, leading to nervous system dysfunction, causing seizures and death.

Toxicity can occur via absorption through the skin, by ingestion, or by inhalation. Typical symptoms of poisoning comprise the SLUDGE syndrome: salivation, lacrimation, urination, defecation, gastrointestinal upset, and emesis. Increased respiratory secretions and pulmonary edema, with the victim drowning in his own secretions, can be the major risk of mortality.

"This is the best insect body spray I have every bought ANYWHERE. Better than anything you'd buy at a drug store. I have literally watched mosquitoes fly away from me as soon as they got close. I think it smells pretty good too."

Immune systems function differently so there is always the risk of a sensitivity even with natural ingredients. Being the risk of contamination is always present in any perishable product please try to use the item within 6 months or keep in the refrigerator.

Shipping policies

Packages are carefully wrapped to ensure it reaches its destination safely.
If the package weighs 13 oz. or less it will ship by USPS First Class Mail. If it is something perishable such as creams or body butters during the heat of the summer I'll send it Priority Mail. If the package is over 13 oz. it will automatically need to be sent Priority Mail.
Packages that ship Priority Mail are automatically insured up to a value of $50.

I live on the east coast, therefore depending on to what zone the package is to be sent will determine the actual shipping costs. Shipping costs for Priority Mail varies greatly as a package travels further across the country. Should the package need not travel as far the actual shipping will of course be less, therefore the buyer will receive a refund on the shipping costs charged at the time of purchase.

For buyers with multiple items, if they end up overpaying on the totaled shipping costs compared to the actual shipping costs, I will reimburse minus the packaging costs.

INTERNATIONAL ORDERS:

Should a buyer choose the Other option as payment please be aware that I cannot accept personal checks. There may be problems with a check drawn on a non-US bank in a foreign currency. In fact, I'm not sure our banks will accept the payment. Payment needs to be as an International Postal Money Order in USD.

Contents of the order are itemized on the custom forms which is the requirement of the seller. Customs duties are the responsibility of the buyer. Each country has different limits and it is up to the buyer to educate himself/herself on that particular country's fees. Custom fees are often based on the dollar value. Businesses are not allowed to mark an order as a gift, it is marked as merchandise.
Below is a helpful resource for finding out how much you may have to pay in fees:
http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/
Due to restrictions on Bath and Beauty products we do not ship to Mexico

Please be patient with the shipping times for international orders. The minimum shipping time is about two weeks, but depending on location it could be a month or longer till the package arrives at the buyers address.
