Succulents are easily overwatered, causing root rot. Don't water your succulents unless they are dry. You should try to avoid watering into the crown of the plant. Frequency of watering depends on several conditions more water in the summer heat and much less in the winter. Heavy, water retaining soil mixes will require much less water than the preferred, well draining mixes. Plants outside in the breeze will dry out faster than succulents inside of a building. Watering succulents indoor can be a little trickier. We don't advise a thorough watering for succulents in cooler, dimmer interior locations. Just enough water to wet the topsoil and trickle down into the roots is usually enough.
Succulents need natural sunlight to keep them healthy so a bright location is important. If your succulents are indoors they should be near a bright window (not north facing). Patios and porches are great because they are bright and breezy. Many cactus and succulents can tolerate full sun in the winter, on the coast they may be fine year round. As you move inland, be more careful with sun intensity because these plants and sunburn. Just like people, cactus and succulents can “tan” their skin and gradually acclimate to more intense sunlight (do a little research before planting in full sun, especially inland. Also, most small plants are too young to withstand a full day of summer sun.
Insects are not a particularly big problem with succulents. Inspect your plant upon purchase. If your plant does develop mealy bug or some other pest, it is best to identify it early on. Then, hopefully, treatment will be simplified with perhaps insecticidal soap, a milder insecticide or a systemic. Check with your professionals where you purchased your plant and remember to always use care when handling pesticides.
Continual overnight lows in the 30's or below will have an adverse effect on most cactus and succulents, especially small and young plants. Google your plants name and you can easily find information regarding how low of temperatures your succulents can tolerate. You will also find things like land of origin. Echeverias are native to Central America, Aloes come from Africa, Agaves originated in Mexico, and Aeoniums were found on the Canary Islands. At the other end of the spectrum we have heat. Not just the heat of the direct sun on a shade grown plant, but the heat generated inside a closed up car, van or truck even on a 75-80 degree day!
Your soil mix should be fast draining. California Greenhouses and most nurseries now carry mixes specifically designed for cactuses and succulents. They are generally a good quality potting mix with additional drainage material such as pumice or perlite. A good fertilizer for cactus and succulents would have balanced percentages of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash. Good, effective granular or liquid succulent fertilizers can also be found at California Greenhouses or your local nursery. It is best to fertilize in the spring and fall, always as per the instructions on the package.
Yellow or off color? Needs fertilizer.
Black spots, or bleaching? Sunburn.
Stretched, or elongated growth? Too little light.
Wilted, or droopy? Needs more water.
Older leaves turning yellow, or mushy? Too much water.
Irregular new growth? Pets, check periodically.
