Mansfield Revisited
Joan Aiken
Gollancz London, 1984
Blue cloth bound with gilt detail and pictorial dust jacket in excellent condition.
Lovely book.
No one, says Joan Aiken in her foreword to this novel, no one could presume to make any attempt to fill the gap left by Jane Austen. If we were allowed a wish, just one work of literature, never written but which we wish had been written, what would we choose? A seventh Jane Austen novel? This book makes no pretense at being such a novel. But, incited by love and admiration, Joan Aiken picks up the story where Jane Austen left it at the end of Mansfield Park, with Fanny Prince's marriage to Edmund Bertram. Fanny's lively sister Susan is the heroine of this novel and has replaced Fanny as Lady Bertram's companion.
Joan Aiken (1924 - 2004) was an English writer specializing in supernatural fiction and children's alternative history novels. In 1999 she was awarded an MBE for her services to children's literature.
Her father was the American Pulitzer Prize winning poet Conrad Aiken, and her brother was writer John Aiken while her sister was writer Jane Aiken Hodge.
In 1962 she published The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, one of her most famous children's books.
She also wrote Jane Fairfax, a follow up to Austen's Emma.
