Description

The snails are made by splitting and tapering the end of a bar. Then the other end is pointed and curled to make the shell.

These work well as paperweights but can also be fixed to the wall by drilling through the top of the shell or simply gluing them so they can be used as small hooks for keys etc.

I forge at Finch Foundry in the village of Sticklepath. The foundry was established in the 17th century and features the last water powered forge in England. There I work with equipment that is hundreds of years old, combining traditional techniques with modern products. I take inspiration from the natural world and enjoy producing detailed, highly textured work which often also has a function. Each piece is wrought from solid steel and hammered out with no mechanical shortcuts.

Each product is finished with a traditional mix of linseed oil and beeswax. Applied hot it burns on to the surface giving a slightly darker finish to the metal without obscuring any of the hammer marks like modern paints or finishes would. This does make it unstable for use in wet conditions, but a very thin layer of cold linseed oil can be applied to allow outdoor use. Please contact me if you require any further information.

Because of the nature of my work and the materials used there will be slight variations between products as no two are ever completely the same.

Nicely hand made item. Sharp points allow its use on larger sticks, but easiest used on smaller wood.
