London, printed by Parker and Co for Peacock, Mansfield and Britton, Salisbury Square.
1866
Thomas Hamerlein
Or Thomas a Kempis.
Original black textured and blind patterned Morocco over solid boards, raised bands, slightly rubbed. Some wear to boards and spine. Internally clean and bright. The rose gilt edged pages are especially beautiful and clean. Marbled endpapers. Printed in red and black throughout. All edges gilt, hinges sound. 8vi (17 x 12cm) 353pp Binding tight, text unmarked.
Leatherbound book with gilt edged pages, gilt tooling, raised bands to spine and marbled endpapers.
The Imitation of Christ is a Christian devotional book first composed in Latin circa 1418 - 1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member.
The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work next to the Bible. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than this.
It was written anonymously in the Netherlands but Thomas a Kempis is generally accepted as the Author.
