Fairhill Farm is located about 6 miles outside the quaint little village of Hawthorne. Bright and early each morning Georgie Finchwater rises with the first call from her fussy rooster, Gilbert. Gilbert likes to strut back and forth each morning crowing his morning alarm. To most people this demanding morning ritual would be rather annoying; but Georgie loves her lifestyle in the country. Each morning she gathers eggs for her family and her customers. She cleans the eggs and gently places them in cartons stacking them in neat piles with a feeling of accomplishment. Before her first customer arrives she cooks a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, and toast for her husband and their daughter Claire. As her husband leaves for the fields, Georgie fills the dishpan with hot soapy water and rushes Claire out the door to watch for customers coming down the winding road leading to the house.
