Description

This is a leather Market Bag made in Mexico with tooled in Aztec Gods on either side. While researched which Aztec Gods these were I discovered there are at least 34 Gods. Based on my research I believe the 2 Gods tooled into this bag are the Aztec sun god Tonatiuh, (pronounced Toh-nah-tee-uh) and Mixcoatl or Camaxtli, the god of the hunt. But, I could be wrong. If you're interested you can look them up here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aztec_gods_and_supernatural_beings

This is a medium sized bag that can be used as a market bag or a tote. It is roughly 12 inches square and 4 inches wide. It has leather lacing on the outside with a cinch tie closure. The dual straps drop 11.5 inches. The inside is leather lined. There is a small pocket inside.

Dimensions:

Length: 12 inches
Height: 11 inches
Width: 4 inches

Strap Drop: 11.5 inches

Condition:

This bag is in excellent condition. There is very little sign of wear. Either the prior owner stored it away and never used it or it was very well maintained. It has no rips, tears or holes. It is structurally sound. It has some scratches and scuffs but not many. Please see photos for best depiction of the condition of this bag.

This is a unbranded tooled leather item. It appears to be handmade. When visiting Mexico in the late 70s we saw similar bags for sale in shops. Based on our knowledge that tooled leather goods have been hand crafted since the middle ages and companies like Tandy Leather Company have been providing resources to leathercrafters since 1919, along with the design and construction material used, it is our opinion that this leather item was created sometime between the mid 1970s and late 1980s.

About Tooled Leather Goods

Tooled Leather is leather that has been worked on with leather tools to carve in a design, pattern, initials or other image for the purpose of decorating the bag.

Tandy Leather Company, which specializes in marketing tooled leather products, says on its website that "Tandy Leather has been the resource for generations of leathercrafters, providing quality leather, tools, kits and teaching resources since 1919. They also state tooled leather goes way back to the Middle Ages and the process of tooling leather was a closely guarded secret kept among Leather Guildsmen who handed it down from father to son who limited their tooling to basic geometric designs. However, when Cortez conquered Mexico in the 16th century Spanish leather craftsmen learned from those they conquered and expanded frin geometric designs to other patterns like flowers and animals. GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. We use multiple procedures to assure the products we sell are authentic. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
