This portrait was inspired by Joyce Carol Oates' memoir "The Lost Landscape" about growing up on a farm in upstate NY. The book begins from the point of view of her pet chicken named Happy Chicken who loved young Joyce.

This sculpture was slowly built up over time using felting needles and a pile of loose fiber. It is a labor-intensive process that uses tiny barbs on the needles to matte the fibers together into a solid felt form. I then added veins of hand-dyed grey fiber to give the work the appearance of a marble sculpture.

After going vegan I did a lot of experimenting to find a way to continue my work without using animal-sourced fiber, and finally found one that would actually felt together! I'm proud to announce that this sculpture is a product of that process.
