I rescued this great looking school house pattern quilt square from an old pillow that was falling apart. I am not certain of the age of the piece but it looks like the real deal to me. The quilting stitches are hand done but I cannot be sure about the piecing. It has a wonderful shabby chic appeal and would look great as a wall hanging or use it to create a new pillow. The red sections are ever so slightly faded but still pretty bright. The sepia fabric looks like it is tea dyed.
Regarding condition, there are vestiges of the previous pillow fabric near the red bound edges on the front so those fibers show a bit but I think the frayed effect is nice. There are a few spots where the tea dyeing is mottled, which again I think adds to its charm. There is one hole I see in the red binding that I have shown in a close-up photo. On the reverse there are tabs stitched to the upper corners where you could easily put a dowel in for hanging.
The piece measures approx. 14” square and has been freshly laundered.
