The top of this Chess set is made from old growth Black Cherry. The old growth trees grew in dense forests and grew slower, this reults in a wood that is denser, heavier, tighter grain, and deeper color as cpmpared to todays commercially grown fast growth trees. I think our pioneer Fore Fathers used whatever trees were abundant and close by to build thier barns, thats why this wood wound up being a barn beam rather than a piece of fine early American furiture. The Americn Black Cherry was shade intolerant which coused them to be giants of our native forests, The old growth trees grew to 130 feet tall with 6 foot diameter trunks to reach above all the other trees in our dense forests for sunlight.

These sets measure 2 3/4'' tall and 16'' square. The side frame of this set is made using pine which is painted with a flat black matte finish paint. I have routed a really good looking bead design around this side frame.

The top is made by saw kerfs that are 1/8'' wide and deep that divide the squares, these squares are stained alternating with natural and deep walnut colored stain then multiple coats of polyurethane which is buffed between coats that results in a piano finish. The deep saw cut grooves between each square give my sets a great sense of visual depth of dimension.

A relly cool thing is when Im cutting or sanding this old wood my shop smells like a cherry cough drop, even after the tree was felled over 100 years ago. This Cherry has a actual glow thats hard to capture with the camera. This particular set has one great old nail hole. This nail hole is blackened from the iron from the nail bleeding into the wood over a span of generations. There is also an fantastic burled area in the corner , this area has a iridescent quilted patter that I show in the first photo . The color of this piece is a beautify deep golden pink.

The Chess pieces are imported (from India) wood carved in the traditional French Staunton style. The detail on these is fantastic, the white are Boxwood and the dark ones are Rosewood. The Kings are 3 1/4'' tall with 1 1/4'' diameter base, the Pawns are 1 1/2''tall and 1'' diameter with felt on the bottom of all pieces. These pieces come in a draw string pouch with a pamphlet on the rules of chess.

I was really missing what little Walnut and Cherry I had reclaimed from my Centerville barn. I placed an ad on Craigs List and it took quite a number of weeks but I finally got a call from a gentleman in a neighboring county. I was able to purchase a pretty fair amount of both American Black Walnut and Cherry. He really didnt have specifics on the detailed history and only told me it was a 1800"s barn in Preble County which is in southwestern Ohio. Each set is marked on the underside the wood species, its location of origin and age of the barn which it came from. Each set is also signed and numbered, zoom in on the photo to see this information.

I have developed a great option to add a back panel for storage of chess pieces or any of your treasures. This is a galvanized steel panel with nice radiused corners that attaches to strong magnets that I attach to the underside of the chess set. This panel has a galvanized finish ( very farm-ish ) and the magnets are nickle plated strong rare earth type, their strength will not dimish with time. This storage panel is a additional $30.00, You can see what its like at my shop, I have a listing thats just for the magnetic panel and shows in detail, in that separate listing I have a real high price just so people don't buy it as separate item, you can choose that panel by using the " Select a Option" key on this listing.

I was recently amazed to see one of my chess sets featured on the Netflix original series " Grace and Frankie". Its season 2 episode 8 and my set is kind of the focal point of the first five minutes

I really enjoy making these beautiful Chess sets. Please click on my ''Feedback'' and you will see previous buyers saying, (and I quote), AWESTRUCK !, LOVE IT, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, BEAUTIFUL, GREAT SELLER, EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS, HUSBAND SAID"BEST GIFT HE EVER RECIEVED".
