Description

Here is a classic, not-so-little black dress: this shows the influence of Dior's post-war New Look with its fitted bodice and full, flowing skirt. Semi sheer dresses might seem pretty daring for this era, but this was definitely intended to be worn with an underslip of some kind--the mannequin is wearing a black slip in photos 1, 4, 5, 8 and 9. Given that the skirt portion is a wide, circular shape, it may have originally been worn with a stiff crinoline, though this is certainly not obligatory.

The dress features short sleeves (sleeves are faced and therefore are the only areas, along with the pintuck panel, that are not see-through) and a square neck that is embellished with a decorative trim; the trim continues down alongside a horizontal pintuck front panel that narrows a bit in order to visually minimize the waist. Bust darts and vertical bodice darts. There is some gathering at the waist, but this is not a dirndl skirt as most of the width is from the circular bias cut of the fabric.

The fabric is gauzy and fine and feels like natural fibres; however, cottons only tended to be used in this era for sturdy day dresses, and more dressy clothing was often constructed from a kind of rayon or other synthetic with a natural feel. It has been hand washed and lightly pressed with a very low heat. The only flaw I can find, see close-up detail in photo 7, is a tiny hole near the bottom front of the skirt--not bad for something about 60 years old.

RETURNS: Most buyers of vintage items know that buying vintage is different from buying modern-produced clothing: some see the odd ‘quirk’ as part of its charm and value and are willing to overlook imperfections. However, if you feel the item has not found its rightful owner in you, and you feel you must return something, in accordance with EU distance trading legislation, this must be done within 14 days of receipt of the item. Please contact me as soon as possible within that time if there is a problem, and I will supply you with an official returns form. The customer bears all return shipping costs.

REFUNDS: English Rose prefers to handle only items in the best possible condition, with minimal flaws and clean and non-smelly. Items are examined and documented before they are shipped to customers, and in order to receive a refund, they must return in the same condition. Some vintage items are fragile, and all are valuable in their uniqueness and in their historical value, so please treat them with tender loving care. Thanks.

Shipping policies

I have not chosen to build in and add shipping costs to the item's price in order to offer "free shipping." Instead, I prefer full disclosure for the buyer, so that they might see the true breakdown of costs. I will do my best to reduce your shipping costs, and if an item turns out to be less expensive at the post office than expected, I will promptly refund the portion of your fees that are above the actual postal charges and shipping costs.
UK customers: most purchases over £20 are sent Royal Mail First Class, Signed-For Delivery. Most purchases under £20 are sent First Class Standard delivery.
International customers: most purchases over £20 are sent Royal Mail International Tracked and Signed. Most purchases under £20 are sent International standard delivery. For both methods, Royal Mail sends these packages airmail and aims to deliver in the EU within 3-5 business days; outside of Europe, 5-7 business days. Royal Mail is a very speedy service, but sometimes the receiving country is not as fast, and there may also be delays due to customs. Any customs fees are the responsibility of the buyer. If you have any shipping preferences, such as Next Day Delivery (within the UK), please convo me.

English Rose intends to provide a quality shopping experience and makes efforts to accurately and fairly describe the items and provide measurements so there should be no unwelcome surprises. Vintage sizing is different from modern sizing standards, and most fabrics (including some synthetics) can experience shrinkage from washing and drying, so please go by the measurements, not the label. Note that the maximum dimensions of the garment are given; you might want to leave a little wiggle room.
Mannequin dimensions: bust 35 in/89 cm, waist 24 and half in/62 cm, hips (8 inches below the waist) 35 in/89 cm, across back shoulders 15 and a half in/39 cm. According to which chart you look at, this makes her either a size 8 or 10 UK, 4 or 6 US, 36 or 38 EU.
