Waterlily Tile based on Victorian Style carving.

This beautiful handmade ceramic tile measures approximately 5 5/8" square, varying slightly due to its handmade nature. The finely carved details depict a waterlily floating in a pond in full bloom. I've glazed it in my transparent gloss turquoise - very beautiful!!

I carved the tile in wax, poured a plaster mould, pressed the tile into a slab of porcelain clay with my homemade hand press, fired, glazed, and refired it.

I just love to carve. Most of my tile designs are carved in wax, because I like the surface texture of it. People ask me what kind of wax I carve in - well, here's my secret formula - "Holy Wax". My Mom, who is very active in her church, and just can't throw anything away, collects all the partially burned candles that would otherwise get trashed. I melt them and pour slabs of wax in an enameled pan that creates a large blank canvas of wax for me. There's hardly anything better than a large blank canvas of wax...well, maybe a large slab of chocolate....dark chocolate.
