Description

The Biographical Edition of the Works of Charles Dickens
in 19 volumes, with introductions to each novel by Arthur Waugh

8vo, 19 vols, half-bound in contemporary polished calf, five raised bands on the spine, gilt lettering and floral motifs, top edges gilt, deckled fore-edges, fore-edges showing light foxing, marbled endpapers, illustrated throughout with reproductions of the first editions, pages clean and bright and all hinges strong, calf showing some occasional rubbing and wear particularly along top edge of spine, but otherwise a very very beautiful set, Very Good +; Chapman and Hall, London, 1902/1903.

The Biographical Edition went into production soon after Arthur Waugh (the father of Evelyn Waugh) joined Chapman and Hall, and was printed between 1902 and possibly 1906. This is an early set from that period, and stunningly bound in a contemporary polished brown calf. Each book has a several page introduction by Waugh. There are 19 volumes in the original set, and a further two were added: Miscellaneous Papers, and the Life of Charles Dickens by John Forster, which were sold separately. This set contains the original 19 works by Dickens, and all the illustrations were reproduced from the First Editions.

Polished Calf is a particularly beautiful leather used in bookbinding. It is smooth and almost glows, but unlike Morocco or Niger goatskin, is fragile and has a tendency to chip, suffer scratches or fray particularly at the top of the spine when the book is incorrectly pulled from the shelf. This is set is in very good condition but after one hundred years, does show some softening at the top of the spines and there is the occasional bit of rubbing to the leather, as to be expected.
