THIS IS MY METHOD FOR AN ANTIQUE FINISH:

Step 1, File any sharp edges:

Sometimes the edges on the back can be sharp and they need to be filed or sanded flat. Take a small jewelers file or use sandpaper (about 400 or 600 grit) to flatten the edges on the back. If you use sandpaper, put it face up on your work table. Then take the stamping and with the back side down, rub it briskly back and forth on the sandpaper a few times while applying a little pressure. Voilà, the edges are smooth.

Step 2, Clean:

These are pretty clean so there's little you have to do. However, these are stamped with machinery and sometimes there are small dots of oil on them. This must be removed in order to finish. What I do with these pieces is to soak them in hot water and Oxyclean™ or another oxygen action cleaner. I put a small amount of Oxyclean™ and a few drops of Dawn™ dishwashing liquid in a plastic container that I do not use in the kitchen. Then I put very hot tap water in the container and mix. Then I soak my pieces in this solution for about 2 hours. After that, dump out the water and rinse off your raw brass piece(s). Dry with a soft cloth.

step 3, Patina:

I use Jax™ Brown; Brass, Bronze, Copper Darkener. There are others to choose from, for example you can use the Jax™ Black or Midas chemicals from www.riogrande.com. Pour a small amount of the chemical into a glass bowl. Don't use a metal container as it will react with the chemicals. You can use plastic but whatever you use, dedicate it only to this task and don't ever use it around food again. I always add just as much water as darkener, otherwise it works too fast. Dunk the piece(s) in the chemical/water mixture and be prepared to take them out quickly. Leave them in only until they're a shade of brown that you like. Take them out with copper or plastic tongs or strain the chemicals (with a non metal strainer) into another container, retaining your now oxidized brass. Rinse your piece(s) very well and dry with a soft cloth. You may want to oxidize just one piece at a time, especially if this is your first time. Store your chemicals in a covered, labeled container in a safe place as they can be used several times.

Step 4, Finish:

If you want to pick up beautiful, golden highlights rub your oxidized pieces with #0000 steel wool. Stop rubbing when you have the amount of highlights that you like.

Step 5, Seal:

Seal your settings by rubbing on a coat of Renaissance™ or another microcrystalline wax. After it dries, almost immediately, buff them well with a very soft cloth.

NOTE:

I've used this method numerous times and it should work beautifully for you. However, I cannot be held responsible for any outcome of your using my methods.

Merci beaucoup :)
