Description

On sale! Magnificent, tall antique porcelain beer stein from Germany, with a porcelain inlay in the pewter lid. Dating to about the 1890s, the stein is not signed but it's of the finest quality, similar to Mettlach.

The stein or pitcher is footed with a wide center and narrower neck. It has a combination of glossy and matte glazes in beiges, brown, blue, and green. It's divided into bands or areas with intricate beading and panels with leaf-like shapes; small applied flowers or daisies; and small circles that were impressed into the wet clay (some of them glazed a different color from the background).

The lid has an ornate handle to it and a blue and beige domed porcelain circle in the middle. On the bottom, the stein is marked with a small blue 22 and the incised numbers 1236. 4.

This would be a stunning addition to any collection of steins, but it's beautiful enough to stand on its own. It's in excellent condition for its age. It has one area near the rim where there appear to be a few glaze pops and a little damage (see photos). There is also a crack on the porcelain on the lid, noticeable mostly on the inside, which is also discolored. The crack does goes all the way through, but the porcelain is still held firmly in place by the pewter. Some of the daisies seem to have lost the color on their center. Please see photos for additional details.

Size: 16 x 7.5 x 6.75 inches (40.7 x 19 x 17.2 cm)
