FAQs

My Signature Style 3-D pet tags, pet memorials and medallions are soldered with at least two layers of metal, so that the indentation marks from the hand stamping on the backside aren't visible. The result is a high-quality, professional looking product. I don't use a machine to stamp the letters/numbers; it is all done by me, individually by hand. This means each one will have its own character and be unique.
For the best durability, brass and nickel silver are best. Copper is a softer metal and while it makes a pretty combination, it will show dings faster if it hangs on a collar with other tags. Copper also darkens from oxidation more quickly than brass and silver. For single layer tags, brass or bronze will hold up best. The life of any of these tags will last longer if they are the only tag on your dog's collar.
There are many steps involved in creating my Signature pieces for you out of raw metal. I personally complete each step myself. Because each design is handcrafted, there are slight variations in patina, stamping depth and spacing, making each piece totally unique. Depending on the design, each piece is:

> individual letters and numbers stamped by hand;
> hammered and filed smooth;
> cleaned, soldered, hole punched and cleaned again;
> patina applied to give it a shadow around the edges;
> polished by hand and machine;
> black coloring is applied to letters and numbers;
> protective wax sealant applied and buffed to help slow oxidation;
> a split ring or clasp is attached.
Many of my 3-D metal tags have a dark "patina" applied by me to the edges, which is unique on each tag and part of the design. Otherwise, metal tags and coins made of copper, brass, bronze or nickel silver will patina naturally over time (aluminum and pewter do not tarnish). I apply a thin protective wax when the piece is new to help prevent oxidation. On pet tags, the normal wear and tear of hanging from a collar and/or tapping against other tags will dull the finish over time, but it remains a durable piece. Buff it with a jeweler's polishing cloth to remove oxidation and restore shine. Letters can be touched up with a permanent marker.
Some metals are inevitably going to oxidize over time, especially copper. My 3-D metal tags and coins are coated with an invisible protective wax to help curb the oxidation process. I include care instructions and a complimentary polishing pad with my 3-D products.

As your tag or coin becomes dark or dull from oxidation, Google is full of ideas to clean it (lemon juice and salt, ketchup, etc.) but eventually the original wax coating will wear off. After cleaning your piece, buff it with a polishing cloth to restore shine. Maintain the shine by applying a thin coat of jeweler's wax or good quality car wax; it will leave a beautiful high polished finish and help prevent oxidation. Use a black permanent marker to restore letters and numbers.
