Description

This Hearts Flame smudge fan is one of a kind, hand made and was placed out for the August 2017 full moon and solar eclipse. Fan is 29" long including tassel (18" long fan and handle) and 7" wide at the widest point.

The feathers are turkey, pheasant, faux eagle, Nagorie swan, Lady Amhurst, guinea fowl, and the fur is rabbit. The handle is leather and the lace tassels are finished with metal copper cones that make a lovely soft rattle when waved.

What are Smudge Fans?
Smudge Fans, sometimes called Spirit Feathers, are beautiful creations made of feathers to use during smudging. Smudge Fans are a tool used to fan the smoke from the burning herbs.

What is smudging?
Smudging is the act of burning sage, resins, and other sacred herbs to cleanse and bless your body and your space. The smoke clears the heavy energies that surround us and bring in positivity and clarity. Smudging gets its roots in Native American culture and can also be found in many places of worship. Anyone who believes that everything is energy and that energy can become heavy, dense or negative can benefit from smudging.

For example: Catholics we see priests and altar servers swinging censers, sending clouds of smoke wafting through the air during mass and other liturgical services. Buddhists burn incense with the intention and necessity to burn away negative qualities within oneself in order to reveal the pure self within.

What is a smudge fan made of?
In following the Native American style the fans are made with feathers, crystals, beads, totem animal skins, wood, bone, and teeth. Traditionally eagle, hawk and owl feathers were used. However now, these and most raptors are either endangered or protected species and the use of their feathers are prohibited.

I make each of these fans by hand. The feathers were all set out for the August 2017 solar eclipse and for the full moon to be cleansed and charged. I use mostly wild turkey, goose, quail, pheasant, duck, and peacock feathers in my creations.
