Description

Hello:

This is an interesting item from New Brighton, PA. It is an ice shaver made of cast iron. The tool has a handle which has an embossed "3 1/2" on the front of the handle. That is actually the diameter of the bowl. The bowl has a pivotal hinge. The lid is marked, "Logan & Strobridge Iron Co, No 10, New Brighton, PA. U.S.A." The back of the bowl has a still sharp serrated edge.

The Logan & Strobridge Iron Co. was founded in 1874 by Turner Strobridge. The business was located in Western, Pa in New Brighton. The company produced a variety of kitchen tools such as ice shavers, cherry pitters, and coffee mills.

This item is in good condition. The blade is intact. The pivoted lid works fine. This tool would have been used to make icy treats by shaving ice from a block. The ice was forced up into the bowl. This would have been a grand snow cone maker. Home refrigerator units were not around until about 1913.

The ice shaver measures 7 1/2 inches long and 3 1/2 inch wide bowl.

This is a nice item for a collector of antique kitchen tools. Great display item for a country kitchen. It is a good conversation piece, because mostly people will not now what it is.
