Description

Before I start I need to apologise for the unimpressive photos in my listings and can assure you better pictures professionally shot on a model will be upcoming. It's the only way I can hope to capture the feel and movement of this incredible piece, so keep checking back if you don't mind!

This is an exquisite and extraordinary Zandra Rhodes dress that encapsulates a defining moment in British fashion history.

One of her earlier butterfly dress creations with the iconic 'diamonds and roses/knitted circle' print from 1969. This is from Rhodes' first collection and is an important find for the serious collector. The butterfly dress combines two prints from this early collection: the Knitted Circle pattern on the bodice, inspired by the circular knitting patterns seen in Fair Isle sweaters; and the Diamonds and Roses pattern on the skirt.

This has her signature cut The sleeves are cut wide and right from the waist in an almost kaftan or kimono feel. The neckline dips and is edged in contrasting print, with ties at the neck.

It still has its original satin sash belt where the label is sewn, with a giant bow that you can use to bring in the waist and add further shape, especially at the back. It also includes a floor length satin baby pink underskirt that hangs longer than the dress. The dress has an elastic waist and slips on to wear and skirt sweeps to the floor in a cascade of feather light chiffon.

Hand finished throughout and the fabric itself is entirely hand painted onto cerise pink, the signature colour of the designer herself.

The particular pattern was immediately embraced by women worldwide but the brightness and vibrancy is a theme that is thankfully back in the fashion news, as colour finally starts to make its way back onto the palette of the fashion world.

In fact Rhodes herself has just launched a new collection revisiting these dresses and retailing at £2000. But here you can purchase the original item, enriched with the spirit of many a fabulous experience gone by.

This is rare and very special. Excellent, museum quality. This particular dress in a different colour was photographed by David Bailey for Vogue in 1969 ( see pic) and the same combination of prints is seen in the famous 1970 Vogue picture of Natalie Woods modeling a similar Zandra Rhodes coat.
Rhodes was favoured used as by Princess Diana as well as many other huge stars and is show pieced in many of the worlds best fashion museums inc The Met and The V&A.

Era-1960s

Fabric- chiffon dress and satin bow and underskirt

Condition- consistent with age considering what fragile fabric it is and that it is hand painted. I think the damage is nominal but I will describe all known issues. Please ask for more photos if need be;
some light fade to the black squiggles under the arms probably where it has been rubbed away under the arms by wear, but it took me a long time to realise this was actual fade and not part of the pattern.

A few of tiny holes near the hem at the back and slightly larger one in the side about calf height that took me a while to find too.

The belt has had the hooks moved at some point to make it bigger. In my opinion it is now far too big for the dress size ( hence it hangs badly on the mannequin) but the option to size it to the individual is there and an easy adjustment.

Size - 10-12-14

Belt- 31"/79cm

Dress:
Length 55"/141cm
Elasticated Waist ( unstretched) 28"/40cm
Stretched 36"/102cm
Armpit to armpit - 34"
Bust - 24"
Sleeve 15"

Underskirt
Waist
Length 41.5"/106cm
The skirt is 1" longer than the dress. It looks longer as its a bit big for my model. I didn't want to stick pins in it to fit her so its hanging a bit lower.

Returns & exchanges

Refunds will be given if it is proven that I have falsely or inaccurately sold you an item. I cannot refund if the size doesn't fit, as vintage items are one -offs and often vary greatly in size. I will give you as much information as i can before sending it off, but it is your responsibility to make sure you have acknowledged the measurements given and checked it against yourself.

Shipping policies

i will post within 1-2 days of sale.

Additional policies

Items i sell labelled "vintage" are classed as so, due to being over 20 years old. So they may not be 100% free of minor defects as they have, of course been worn. I include any noticeable flaws in item descriptions and photographs for buyer discretion.
Of course the reason I sell vintage is that the quality of items from previous eras tends to far surpass most of the modern and one can presume the quality is very high. unless i deem an item 'style-led' which may mean the quality is a little comprised but the style and statement the item may give is still of value.

Do contact me if you have any questions or comments. I gladly provide additional photos, measurements, and/or any additional information or even historical information on the era or label of the item that's being offered.
