Oh, now, let me tell you about Hebridean sheep. They are unlike any other kinds of sheep.

First of all, they are wild. Not really domesticated. They like running around the hills and over the rocks of the Hebridean islands off the West Coast of Scotland.

Hebrideans have a rough, dark brown fleece and the rams have fabulous curled horns. When the lambs are born they become a mob of youngsters careening about the place with their mothers watching from a distance.

So with a big ball of pure Hebridean yarn in hand I wanted to make a piece that was as wild as the sheep who made it. I decided on a Cowl, which could be worn by a man or a woman.

As I knitted it up in moss stitch, I broke the yarn in a wanton fashion and then knotted it with loose ends, all frayed.

Because the pure wool is rough like the Hebridean sheep themselves, I decided to use a vintage silk scarf to line the inside so it is soft and also very, very warm to wear (but of course being all natural fibres of silk and wool, the Knitted Bark Neck Cuff breathes beautifully).

I cut the scarf roughly into three pieces, sewed them together and then sewed it to the wool cowl, leaving ends and threads and knotting the ends of the silk.

If you haven't worn a pure wool scarf on cold days, maybe just had acrylic ones before, you will not believe the difference in warmth. Ah!

To make the Knotted Bark Neck Cuff extra special, I bought a stag antler tip toggle as its closure which has the most lovely curve to it.
