When I picked up another “fish fossil” pendant and then saw these Indonesian fish vertebrae beads, this necklace became obvious. What should you mix with fish bones? More fish bones! The spacer beads are also Indonesian and are ceramic. Notably, this necklace posed a technical challenge; I really wanted to knot it, but between the concave vertebrae and the large holes in the ceramic, I wasn’t sure how to do it. So, invisible, between the beads, are tiny glass seed beads, that allowed me to place the beads for knotting.

The pendant is hand-carved from a single piece of multi-color amazonite. The clasp is solid copper and probably from Bali. The fish vertebrae are imported from Indonesia and are almost certainly a by-product of the seafood heavy diet of many Indonesians. The ceramic beads are handmade and are also from Indonesia. The necklace is hand knotted on black silk, and the pendant is roughly 1.75 inches long. Including the clasp, this necklace is slightly longer than 20 inches.

Disclosure: Please note that the display mannequin in the photo is about half-human scale; the necklace has been draped around the back of the mannequin to simulate how the necklace would hang. Please refer to the other photos for a picture of the entire necklace and an indication of scale. Copper is not hypoallergenic and those prone to skin irritation should consider one of my pieces using sterling silver or vermeil findings. Like all silk knotted necklaces, care should be taken not to get this necklace wet, and it should be stored flat: silk will stretch over time. Like all of my jewelry, this necklace is not intended for use by persons under 13.
