Description

This ring is bezel set with a piece of corvette fordite featuring a near perfect 'bullseye' of rings in sparkly red, silver and black in a ferrari yellow ground. The oval of fordite is mounted portrait on a gently hammered sterling silver band - the width of the band is such that it could be stacked with other band rings.
Fordite is layers of baked car paint that built up accidentally in the spray booths and most of this wonderfu material was sent to waste with only small amounts leaving the factories. Each colour is where they have sprayed a car (a bit like tree rings) and for this piece the yellow was the last layer (the bark in my tree analogy) before it was removed. I cut and polished this cabochon from a lump of rough (you can see the remainder in some photos) that came from the Bowling Green plant in Kentucky making it corvette fordite, the rough was collected in the early 2000's. So this ring would make a wonderful gift for anyone with a love of Corvettes or muscle cars in general. Fordite is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to source as they have changed the manner in which cars are painted. Fordite is very durable but should it get scratched you can apparently repolish it with turtle wax or similar! I just use 7 grades of polishing paper to get it to a high shine (the white marks in the close up photo are bits of fluff, its still a bit staticy from the final polish!). The band has a hammered texture.
Ring is approx size L (approx USA size 6, could be resized up by about a size if need be (just let me know if you would like me to do this for you)), the band is about 1.5mm wide and the fordite is 13mm x11mm.
