Description

This is a vintage stickpin (or lapel pin), with a head that is in the shape of a horseshoe and that has small diamonds on it. Each diamond is in a setting that is open in the back, which causes light to filter through the openings and to emphasize the sparkle of each stone. The stick part of this pin and the back of the horseshoe are 18k yellow gold. The front of the horseshoe, in which the diamonds are set, is platinum. I do not know exactly when this particular pin was made, but classic stickpins like this one were very popular during the latter part of the 19th Century and the early part of 20th Century.

Around the world, the horseshoe has long been considered as a symbol of good luck. For various cultures, there are superstitions and folklore related to the “luck” of the horseshoe. Some cultures believe that, when the horseshoe is hung with the ends pointing down (as they are on this stickpin), it will release luck to the people around it. Many cultures simply believe that, since horsehoes protect horses, they must protect people too.

This stickpin has a head that is about 5/16 of an inch (wide) by 7/16 of an inch (high). The pin’s total length is about 2 7/8 inches.

This item is in very good condition. There is a slight bend on the stick part of the pin, which is not uncommon on old pins that have been worn a lot. The metal on the stickpin is unmarked. This is also not uncommon for old pins. The metal has been tested and is guaranteed to be 18K gold and platinum. The pin does not come with an end-clasp.
