Description

100grms of White Devon Top

The Devon Closewool is a breed of the domestic sheep originating in the Exmoor region of southwest England. This breed is raised primarily for meat. It was developed in the late 19th century by crossing native Exmoor ewes with a Devon Longwool ram. A breed society was formed in 1923, and the first flocks registered dated back to 1894. It has since expanded its range into neighboring regions.

The Devon Closewool is a very hardy sheep with a docile temperament making it an ideal sheep for the first time flockmaster or the commercial farmer looking for an easy care, low input sheep who survives and thrives on a purely grass based diet. Lambing percentages are usually between 150-170% and are even higher in lowland flocks. Ewes remain prolific and productive for up to seven crops and hold their teeth well. Rams are fertile over a long working life (6-7 years).

The fleece of rams weighs 6kgs, ewes 4kgs with a micron count of 48-53. The wool is dense, medium length with a strong staple which does not part easily so the skin stays dry. This enables the sheep to thrive in wet, cold conditions

The Devon Closewool is a white faced sheep with a dense, medium-length fleece. Both rams and ewes are naturally polled. The Devon Closewool is a medium size sheep, with average ewes weigh 55 kg (121 lbs) to 60 kg (132 lbs) and rams weigh 90 kg (198 lbs).
It is a breed with a stout, symmetrical appearance that is hardy and suited to open grasslands and heaths in upland territoryThe Devon wool fleece is one of the heaviest clips in the UK with fleeces weighing up to 10kgs.

It is good felting wool and the lambs from this breed are excellent for knitwear and woven fabrics

Microns: 40-60mic
Fibre Length: 200-250mm
Top Roving Length: 4 metres per 100g
