This lovely necklace features mahogany obsidian beads and a black onyx pendant that has been carefully hand-wrapped in reclaimed sterling silver wire. It is finished with a shining sterling silver toggle clasp.

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed by internal crystallites when viscous lava is rapidly cooled, most commonly by water. Obsidian is less fragile than standard window glass, and was often fashioned into sharp cutting edges in the stone ages.

Obsidian has been used for tool making since at least 21,000 B.C. and used in jewelry for many centuries. American Indians used it for arrowheads, and the Aztecs used a great deal of obsidian for items such as sacrificial knives and mirrors.

Major sources include Iceland, Italy, Wyoming and Hawaii in the US, Japan and Java.
