Crafting beautiful ornaments and jewelry pieces from animal bone is a time-honoured tradition among many of the world's cultures, including several of the diverse ethnic groups scattered through the Indonesian archipelago.

Delicately hand-carved pieces come alive in the hands of talented artisans such as those found on the island of Bali.

Bone is a sturdy and versatile material that is durable enough to craft a treasured heirloom. The bone used in Indounik cabochons is from cattle and is sourced from Java.

It's carved in the village of Tampaksiring, home of the island's best carvers of bone, horn and shell.

In Indonesia, the dragonfly is known as capung, pronounced chapoong.

Deep in the sun-searched growths the dragonfly
Hangs like a blue thread loosened from the sky:
So this winged hour is dropt to us from above.
Oh! clasp we to our hearts, for deathless dower,
This close-companioned inarticulate hour
When twofold silence was the song of love.
~ Dante Gabriel Rossetti,
The House of Life, 'Silent Noon', pt.1
