Description

Tessellations is one of a set of four artworks that pay tribute to groundbreaking contributions made by African American women in science.

This print celebrates Gloria Ford Gilmer, PhD, a mathematician and one of the first African American women to complete a doctorate. Gloria is a pioneer and leader at the forefront of the field of Ethnomathematics, bringing focus to the issues of access and equity within mathematics fields, highlighting the complexity of mathematics in African American culture, and challenging Eurocentrism in mathematics education. In 1998, Dr. Gilmer launched an inquiry into tessellations in box braids. While braiding hair isn’t generally thought to be mathematical, mathematical practices include not only formal symbolic systems, but also spatial designs, practical construction techniques, calculation methods, measurement in time and space, specific ways of reasoning and inferring, and other cognitive and material activities. Using results from her studies, she created classroom activities for students to understand the mathematics that are commonplace within African American culture and how they are found in nature, such as the tessellating hexagons found in braids that resemble honeycombs in beehives. Dr. Gilmer currently works to translate research into effective mathematics education programs, especially for women and minorities.
