This listing is for 1 Digital Download of a PDF Knitting Pattern in ENGLISH ONLY (no other languages).

This listing is NOT for the finished Tam. If you are looking to purchase the finished tam, click here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/285497623/outlander-tam-scottish-bonnet-hand-knit?ref=shop_home_feat_1&frs=1

I designed this Scottish Highlands Tam to be a replica of the tams as worn by the characters of the TV show “Outlander”. It is a full “Scottish Bonnet” style tam that can be worn by men or women. This style of Tam was customarily worn by 17th & 18th century Scots.

This pattern is best suited to an advanced beginner to intermediate knitter. You'll need to know how to knit in the round on circular needles using the magic loop method. How to knit, purl, do increases and decreases, how to follow a basic knitting pattern, and how to felt a knitted item.

The tam pattern shows instructions for 3 sizes M, L & XL, but also info on how to size up and down one more size if needed.

The tam is knit on circular needles (using the magic loop method), and then welt felted (fulled). I’ve included extra photos in the pattern to show how things should look as you go along, as well as a tutorial with photos on how to felt and shape your tam after it is knit.

You’ll need approximately 250 yards of a 100% wool yarn, like Knit Picks, Wool of the Andes (or other similar wool) in a worsted weight. You’ll also need 2 circular needles (or interchangeable needles) in size 7 and size 8, a cable that is 40” (for Magic Loop technique), and 1 large eye tapestry needle.

This was my first knitting project and it was a Christmas gift for my boyfriend who loves to watch Outlander. The directions were so clear in every step, that knitting the hat was very easy, even for a first timer. When it got to felting the hat, I was very nervous because I had never done it before. Again, the directions were so easy and complete step by step I was able to complete it, like 1.2.3. And the result was a beautiful hat, just like the picture and on Outlander. ps I used woolite

am a VERY slow knitter - as it tends to put me to sleep!! but have finally finished this tam. wish there had been a gauge mentioned on this pattern. Followed the directions with the right yarn, the right needles, and the right measurements. and after felting its still too big Not by much, but by just enough to let it wobble on my head. It looks good, the directions were easy to follow. But obviously my gauge was off from the author's!

I ordered this pattern 12 days ago and since then I have made the tam 2 times. I ordered the yarn on the same day and it didn't arrive for several days. I'd say that it took 3 evenings, while watching TV to complete each one. The instructions for the knitting and felting were easy to follow.

It was a pleasure to knit this hat as a surprise for my husband's doctorate. We live in Germany, so I couldn't get my hands on Knit Picks Wool of the Andes worsted yarn. I used Cascade 220 instead, which was a similar composition - merino and alpaca. It was much more expensive, but felted really nicely. Unfortunately, the hat band was too large so I fulled/felted the hat a second time to shrink it. I suppose this could be a yarn problem, or a novice felter's problem. It would have been nice to have been able to just shrink the hat band. Now it looks more like a beret.
