Background: Phantom Circus is an extended prose poem about Tinkertown. a museum in New Mexico. The museum, built over forty years ago by retired circus muralist and outsider artist Ross Ward (1941-2002), is filled with circus dioramas, ephemera, murals, miniature wild west shops, saloon, costumes and found art. 50,000 vintage glass bottles are embedded in the adobe walls. Tinkertown is located on the road to Sandia Crest, a 10,000 foot ridge in central New Mexico, considered sacred by the Sandia Pueblo.
