Description

This year I've printed the beautiful colours we see in deciduous trees directly from a large fallen oak leaf onto Japanese washi paper with a leaf pattern, and made representations of the molecules responsible for the colours, in lino printed in gold ink. The edition of 6 is variable. Each print is made on 11" by 14" (27.9 cm by 35.6 cm).

The molecules, or schematics of the general structure of complex organic molecules are printed directly over the leaf print in the appropriate colour. For instance, the green colour of leaves is due to chlorophyll, and this molecule is printed on top of the green leaves on each print. Plants produce chlorophyll in the warm spring and summer, but are unable to do so as the temperature drops in the fall. Chlorophyll starts to break down and thus, we are able to see warm colours, caused by other molecules which were always present.

The yellow colour of leaves are caused by carotenoids (specifically xanthophylls) and flavonoids. Three such molecules: lutein, flavone and flavonol are shown over the yellow part of the leaf. Other carotenoids cause the orange colour of leaves, including violaxanthin and beta-carotene shown here. Beta-carotene also explains the colour of carrots. Lycopene is also a carotenoid; it causes leaves to turn red and is printed over the red part of the leaf. Lastly, when temperatures drop and sugar content rises in leaves, sunlight causes the production of anthocyanins, which may help protect leaves from excess light. Anthocyanins also add to the red colour and a schematic of their general structure is shown over red leaf tip.
